"Queen of the Blue" is a work of breathtaking technical complexity that submerges the viewer in a universe of cobalt blue and gold. In this piece, the female figure becomes a totem surrounded by a multitude of "eye-fish" swimming through a dense web of black lines. The work is a celebration of detail, where golden spirals and meticulous dot-work create a visual texture that seems to vibrate, evoking both the constant movement of the ocean and the opulence of a baroque theatrical costume.
Artistic Details & Influences
_Scenic Drama: True to his background as a stage director, Mas composes this work with a dynamic symmetry reminiscent of a ceremonial mask or a large-scale stage headpiece.
_The Heritage of Masters: The elegant and obsessive use of black lines is a direct tribute to Amelia Peláez, while the repetition of ocular motifs and fish refers to the mystical symbolism of Wifredo Lam.
_Light and Contrast: The technique of master Héctor Cata shines in the use of gold against deep blue, reclaiming that "explosion of light" and transparency that defines Mas’s visual memory of colonial Havana.
